1. Prerequisites *Algemene competenties Bioinformatics
*Sequentiality Bio-informatics (3BBIC-04)
2. Objectives (expected learning outcomes)
The student is expected to learn the basics of scripting and database querying.
Students will also learn how to analyse large dataset using batch tools.
3. Course content In the basic bioinformatics course databases and bioinformatics tools were used through the web interfaces. For the analysis of large or repeated datasets, these interfaces are usually not flexible enough and require to much manual work. In this course, the basics of batch processing, scripting and database querying will be tought, and applied in advanced bioinformatics topics, such as datamining.
4. Teaching method Direct contact: LecturesExercise sessions Personal work: ExercisesAssignments - individual
5. Assessment method Exam: Oral, with written preparationClosed book Continuous assessment: Assignments
6. Compulsory reading – study material
Network connection (there will be practical exercises in the computer lab) Course and exercises will be made available via the website (http://www.molgen.ua.ac.be/bioinfo/course/applied/index.html)
7. Recommended reading - study material Links with extra material will be available via the website.
8. Tutoring
questions about the course can always be asked after the lessons or exercises, or by email.
