Course details 2010-2011

Profile of the programme
The Bio-engineering programme is mainly an engineering programme.  You have a thorough knowledge of biology, maths, physics, and chemistry, and learn to integrate and apply scientific technology at engineering level, taking into account the socio-economic context.  You will get to know biological and chemical systems in order to apply them optimally.  There are many applications, ranging from cellular and genetic technology, to chemistry, environmental technology, and agriculture and forestry. Thanks to excellent communication with other Flemish universities this bachelor programme precedes their master programmes seamlessly. In the first two years you will study general basic sciences. In your third bachelor year you will be offered a choice of 4 main subjects in environment-technical, genetic, cellular, chemical, or biological applications.  In each of these majors, the typical engineering aspects will be reviewed.  Exercises and applications will be taught in small groups.  You will get to know the industry via apprenticeships and visits to businesses, under supervision from teachers active in the industry.
Occupational profiles of graduates
The programme offers a variety of career opportunities. You could find employment in different industrial sectors, control laboratories, in production, process development, quality control, water treatment, waste disposal, but also in research and even development cooperation.  The research in the department of Bio-engineering sciences focuses on two research areas: Chemistry and food technology and Environmental technology study Durable energy and air purification; Cellular and genetic biotechnology and Agriculture and forestry study Plant production and stress tolerance. Furthermore, the methods allow the graduate to find work outside the discipline, such as in commercial management and informatics-oriented positions, as an advisor, in education, in the service industry or the environmental sector.
