Course details 2012-2013

Profile of the programme
Chemistry studies matter at the level of atoms and molecules, i.e. the way atoms connect to molecules, the way molecules react to one another by forming new molecules or how molecules form supra-molecular structures together.  The field of chemistry is quite expansive and ever on the move.  As a consequence, many sub-disciplines have sprouted: organic chemistry, anorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, etc.  Chemistry is also closely linked to other sciences, paving the way for specialties such as physics-chemistry, biochemistry, geochemistry, christal-chemistry, cosmos-chemistry and many others. One could say without exaggerating that chemistry is everywhere, which is why you will find chemists in very diverse places.  Chemists are working on solving many environmental issues: e.g. by looking for environmentally friendly synthesis processes, energy saving measures, and better waste disposal via recycling, etc.
Occupational profiles of graduates

Chemists find employment in:

  • Companies: from SME’S to multinationals, in petro-chemistry, metallurgy, photo-chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry and many others. Chemists are needed for the production, quality control, product improvement, sales, and also the waste treatment and environmental policy
  • Education, both at secondary school level (technical and general), and in higher education (university and non-university)
  • Fundamental and applied scientific research: at universities, research and development centres, clinical, private or public laboratories.
  • Government services (ministries, city laboratories) in charge of public health, environment, safety, etc.
