1. Prerequisites
At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences: An active knowlegde of :- General knowledge of the use of a PC and the Internet
Specific prerequisites for this course:
Limited knowledge of mathematics is necessary. Limited knowledge of computer skills, such as working with MS Windows, Internet, data management, ...
2. Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is the obtain insigth in the basic principles of GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
On the one hand students know the theoretical concepts of GIS.
On the other hand, they can apply the practical skills that they have learned during the practical sessions.
3. Course contents
The spatial presentation, analysis and modelling of data in a GIS (Geographical Information System) is essential for environmental scientists, such as biologists and bio-engineers. In a first, theoretical part of this course, a number of basic principles of GIS are explained, such as data file structure in a GIS (vector, raster, attribute files), data acquisition (geo-referencing, digitazing of maps, classificationof remote sensing images, LIDAR, ...), data conversion, spatial interpolation (Kriging, triangulation), errors and filtering, spatial analyses (e.g., overlay, zonal classification, nearest distance, analysis of digital elevation models), cartographic presentation, introduction to spatial-dynamic modelling. In a second, practical part, broad attention is paid to practical excercises and tasks (in Arcview, Idrisi and/or Mapinfo), and the use of GIS data sources on the Internet (e.g., Agic, Geocommunity,...).
