1. Prerequisites
At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences: Specific prerequisites for this course: Basic knowledge in general biology
2. Learning outcomes
The student will have a good understanding of the keyprocesses that play a role in the marine environment. Within this framework the student will be able to estimate the effects of changes e.g. through Global Change.
3. Course contents
The marine environment is a fascinating world. In this course general physical characteristics of the marine environment (currents, light, salinity, temperature, pressure, pH...) will be discussed, as well as marine organisms and their adaptations to the marine environment. Tidal zones, and special ecosystems such as the mangrove, coral reefs, the Sargasso, deepseas and polar seas get special attention. Students choose a specific topic to study in depth.
