1. Prerequisites

At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences:

  • Competences corresponding the final attainment level of secondary school

Students have no fear of mathematics or informatics. You don't have to be excellent in these, just confident that you can learn


2. Learning outcomes

After this course, students know the basics of ecological modelling and are capable of working with- and modifying existing models





3. Course contents

During this course students follow the handbook: Ecological Modelling by Smith & Smith. This handbook uses simple exercises to teach students the basis of ecological modelling.

In a second part of this course students learn to apply a model developed by Dr. Deckmyn herself: ANAFORE (=ANAlysis of FORest Ecosystems). Students test the sensitivity of the model to various parameters and test the effect of climate change scenarios on ecosystem functioning.
