1. Prerequisites
At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences: Specific prerequisites for this course: Basic knowledge of behavioural biology, behavioural ecology and animal physiology.
2. Learning outcomes
The students have the ability to observe and interpret behaviour (for example the independent establishment and implementation of behaviour protocols, analysis and interpretation of simple observation data, writing a paper/essay/project proposal in accordance with the assignment…). The students are familiar with (1) asking the correct questions within the context of behavioural research; (2) how hypotheses and predictions can be tested on the basis of behavioural data; (3) how behavioural data are processed, interpreted, and presented. The students have the ability to critically discuss English language professional literature.
3. Course contents
The most recent developments in behavioural research will be discussed. Attention will be given to mechanical, functional and evolutionary aspects. Moreover, several skills which are essential for behavioural research will be acquired and applied during individual and/or group projects (e.g. independently establishing behavioural protocols, analysis and interpretation of observational data, writing essay, drawing up of hypotheses, writing a short research proposal,…)
