1. Prerequisites
At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences: Specific prerequisites for this course: A good active and passive command of English is required.
2. Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with the general cultural background information that readers of quality newspapers such as The Independent, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The Times are supposed to have.
3. Course contents
The course deals with a number of aspects of contemporary British society and culture in the broader sense: the UK and devolution, the parliamentary system and its history, the relationship with the EU,... whenever deemed necessary the historical evolution of social and cultural phenomena will be discussed. Though the course does not intend to present a history of British art, some attention will be paid to typically British art movements (eg the Pre-Raphaelites). The information provided by the textbook will have to be complemented by lecture notes. (The course does not deal with English literature: this will be covered in other courses in the curriculum. The historical aspects of the course will provide the students with background information that may be useful for the literary courses, though.)
The written exam presents the students with a number of recent newspaper extracts containing references to assumed background knowledge which the students will have to explain.
