1. Prerequisites
At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences:
- Competences corresponding the final attainment level of secondary school
A passive knowledge of :Students who do not have Dutch as their mother tongue are kindly invited to make contact with the teacher of the course at the start of the semester: frank.willaert@ua.ac.beForeign students, who do not study Dutch language and literature at their home university, can take the (written) exam in French, English, German, Spanish or Italian. A bilingual dictionary may be brought to the exam, if requested in advance. - General knowledge of the use of a PC and the Internet

2. Learning outcomes
Basic knowledge of the history of the Low Countries; understanding that seemingly self-evident concepts as 'Nederlands', 'Vlaams' etc. were the imprevisible outcome of an interplay of numerous historical factors; ability to interpret canonised cultural artefacts within their historical context.
3. Course contents
Discussion of the most important cultural movements, genres and artefacts in the Low Countries within their political, economical and social context.
