2. Learning outcomes

Students are acquainted with with the most important authors and texts of modern Dutch literature from the end of the eighteenth century up to 1914: knowledge about the authors and texts and further insight into the evolution, genres, institutions and styles.


3. Course contents

Survey of the modern Dutch literature in the so-called "long" nineteenth century with special interest for processes of canonisation (and decanonisation), development of genres, the institutionalization of literary criticism, the reception of European styles and the functioning of literature. This course problematizes the concept of  Dutch literature and investigates the autonomy and interactions of the different literary systems in Holland and Belgian Flanders.
