1. Prerequisites
At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences: An active knowlegde of :A passive knowledge of :- General knowledge of the use of a PC and the Internet
Specific prerequisites for this course: Students have taken a course of General Linguistics and the Ba1 course of Modern French linguistics (synchrony).
2. Learning outcomes
- Gain insight into contemporary sociolinguistic theories. - Be able to situate linguistic theories in a broader framework. - Become interested in an interdisciplinary approach to linguistics.
3. Course contents
A brief history of sociolinguistics, basic concepts and description techniques. Study of bilingualism, diglossia, variation (dialects, sociolects, group languages), language change, standardization and norms, language policy and planning, especially focused on French in France and in the world.
