2. Learning outcomes
This course offers a coherent historical framework for other courses in French literature, especially specialization courses dedicated to individual authors. Therefore, encyclopedic knowledge of the evolution of French literature (authors, works, themes,) is important, but still subordinated to developing a historical and cultural-historical conscience allowing students to understand important evolutions in the literary field (genres, currents, innovative authors).
Students will also read 4 literary works and will be able to comment upon these, situating them in their historical context as developed in class (period, genre, stylistic features, themes etc.)
3. Course contents
This course offers a systematic overview of the evolution of French literature from the Middle Ages up to the end of the 18th Century, attempting to situate the evolution of genres and currents and the most important authors in their cultural and historical context.
