1. Prerequisites
At the start of this course the student should have acquired the following competences:
- Competences corresponding the final attainment level of secondary school
An active knowlegde of :A passive knowledge of :The students are able to read a scientific article written in these languages. - General knowledge of the use of a PC and the Internet
Specific prerequisites for this course: A good basic knowledge of Latin and reading experience.
2. Learning outcomes
To gain more insight into the literary interpretation of a major work of Latin literature through classical close reading and commenting of selected passages.
3. Course contents
OVID: we will read and comment capita selecta of his Metamorphoses, or of his amatory or exile poetry, depending on the preference of the students, to be decided at the beginning of the semester. The stories of Pygmalion, Myrrha and Adonis in the tenth book of the Metamorphoses, are very much worth reading
The students will additionally read a) three articles, and b) the rest of the text in a modern translation.

Required reading
A course book with introduction, bibliography and commentary will be provided on blackboard; copies of the Latin texts will be distributed at the beginning of the sessions. Copies of the articles to be read will also be distributed in the course of the semester.
Optional reading
The following study material can be studied on a voluntary basis: A modern translation of the work we will read.
