Course details 2012-2013

Profile of the programme
When studying History, one is assumed to develop an insight into the evolution of human civilisation.  For this very reason, you will not only deal with antiquity, the Middle Ages, or history of the Lower Countries, but also be confronted with recent history.  Subjects such as introduction to social sciences, to western philosophy, and to economics will offer the necessary background to study the past from all angles.
The course has an emphasis on historiography and the science of history itself.  History is also put into practice: how to formulate a research question, how to collect and interpret literature on a certain topic, how to work with archives and how to write your conclusions clearly.
Occupational profiles of graduates
About a third of our graduates end up in the education system.  However, there are many other options.  Many historians have careers in public services, and the cultural, or heritage sector.  Other employers include the health, welfare or social-cultural sectors, universities. Journalism and diplomacy also attract historians.  Finally, areas of the private sector such as trade, tourism, banks and insurance companies, attract quite a few history graduates.
