This programme is the only one in Flanders that is totally focused on the thorough scientific study of film and visual culture. Central in the curriculum are theory, history, and the analysis of the medium of film as a multicultural phenomenon. The carefully chosen subjects deal with the specific nature of film as a form of art and communication and as a social institution where diverse questions regarding cultural representation are relevant. Other forms of visual communication are covered as well. There is some attention for recent developments in image technology and its influence on aesthetics and the social impact of film. The lectures are illustrated extensively with film fragments and other visual material. This programme relies on cooperation between the University of Antwerp and her partners in the Association and the Filmmuseum in Antwerp, MuHKA_media.
