Profile of the programme
During the first part of the 20th century mass media were in politics considered to be all powerful. Power was apparently located in their assumed direct effects. Attention since than has moved to the power context of the political communication processes. The master program in political communication therefore, details the interaction between politicians, mass media and the audience in the power process.

Entirely new for the Netherlands and Belgium are the focus, the character and the organisation of this master program.

The master in political communication is the only program in the Netherlands and in Belgium that entirely focuses on the political communication domain. The program prepares students for specific professions in the political sphere.

The master in political communication has an interdisciplinary character and it is organised by scholars from the Political Science Department and the Department of Communication.

The organisation of the master program reflects the gradual accumulation of knowledge. By way of the application of the modular system, the contents of the master program are planned in a logical way. Students start their political communication education attending theory lectures. Many examples make them familiar with the most important theoretical insights. Students after that receive intensive research training and they participate in empirical research supervised by their professors. Students are in the final stage encouraged to set up their own empirical study. Besides, they have the option of taking an internship at the headquarters of a political party, a newspaper, the army…

To facilitate the modular system, the political communication master program is spread over trimesters (three month periods). This means that exams are held before the Xmas and the Easter break so that students can make good use of their holidays.

Political communication is an academic master program in which theory and empirical research plays major role. Some attention is nevertheless paid in the program to practice, writing and camera training.
