Profile of the programme
Epidemiology is the discipline that studies the occurrence of events and situations in populations and that tries to connect this occurrence to descriptive and or influential determinants. As such, epidemiology is strongly connected with the domain of Public Health. Therefore epidemiology is pre-eminently a user of statistical methods. One of the most important requirements for a good epidemiologist is a thorough knowledge of inferential statistics. During the last decades methodological concepts from epidemiology have also been applied in scientific problems that originate in the (clinical) doctor-patient relationship and specific methods have been developped around different domains (e.g. genetic epidemiology). Therefore, the epidemiologist has become indispensable in the set up, the execution and the analysis of applied medical research on the one hand and in the application of medical scientific knowledge in policy development on public health on the other hand.

The objective of the programme is to provide students that have completed a bachelor of medicine or a bachelor of biomedical science with the knowledge, the skills and the competences to independently perform epidemiological research in a multidisciplinary environment within one of the domains of epidemiology. The objective is also to enable them to take on advisory and policymaking functions on a scientific level in health care.
The graduated master of epidemiology has the knowledge of and insight in epidemiological methods and techniques of patient-related research and in the occurrence and the determinants of important diseases and health problems. After completing the studies, the graduate can transform research questions from the practice of health care and public health into a research object and a study. He can execute the study or co-ordinate it. He can analyse the collected data, interpret the research results and communicate appropriately to the scientific community as well as to the actors in the practice of health care and public health. The domain-specific learning outcomes of the programme correspond with the registration requirements as epidemiologist-A in the Netherlands.

Occupational profile of graduates
Epidemiologists predominantly find themselves working in the world of health policy, in scientific research or in education. During the last decades the action field of the epidemiologist has been significantly extended: whereas the epidemiologist used to focus mainly on research questions in preventive medicine and public health, one now tends to rely more and more on the methodological expertise of the epidemiologist in clinical scientific research, in applied genetic research, .... Some of the graduates will hold a promotion position at an academic institution in Belgium or abroad. Other graduates will end up with organisations in public health. A third category of job opportunities for graduates is within the pharmaceutical industry, a.o. as "Clinical Research Associate" (CRA). The programme also offers a good base for a career as applied clinical researcher, possibly in combination with a function as medical specialist. Finally, a number of graduates will find a place in educational facilities (universities and university colleges).
