Political Science

Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Political Science department of the University of Antwerp.

The department is situated in the historic center of Antwerp, the biggest city in Flanders (Dutch-speaking part of Belgium). Besides its cultural and historical significance, Antwerp is an economic centre harbouring one of the Europe’s largest ports and the second chemical cluster worldwide (after Houston). Antwerp also has a long tradition as the world capital of the diamond trading industry. In Belgian politics, Antwerp has always been a political laboratory where new movements as diverse as  Flemish nationalism, green parties and urban activism emerged. In the early 1990s, Antwerp was also the scene of the breakthrough of one of Europe’s first contemporary right-wing populist parties: the Flemish Block (Vlaams Blok). After being excluded from power for 20 years, the party seems to be on its way down now

Political Science in Antwerp is a young and dynamic department. The department has grown considerable during the last few years. At present, we count 11 full-time professors and around 50 researchers.

The department offers various bachelors and master degrees to approximately 350 students. We have a bachelor degree in Political Science, a master degree in Comparative and European politics, a master degree in International Relations and Diplomacy, and a master in Political Communication.

The research of the department is organized in five research groups that cover most subdisciplines in political science.
