Welcome to the site of the International and European Legal Studies Programme (IELSP)
The IELSP is a postgraduate study programme offering a variety of courses in international, European and comparative law. The knowledge that this programme offers will be of value to students from all over the world. The IELSP is also the programme which is offered to our incoming exchange students coming from over 40 partner universities within Europe or under bilateral agreements with overseas universities. Exchange students may follow courses from the regular curriculum (taught in Dutch) or may choose courses offered in English. We recommend our partner institutions to send students who have succesfully completed at least three years of law school. Incoming students who have completed only two years, should be excellent students. The courses offered in the English programme presume a preliminary knowledge of all basic law courses.
Every year, the IELSP attracts students from Africa, North and South America, Asia and Europe. As students of about 20 nationalities participate in the IELSP, you will attend class with students from many different (legal) cultures. We offer a high quality educational experience and welcome the contribution made by the diverse backgrounds and perspectives. The programme is composed of 12 courses. All courses are taught in English by a teaching staff consisting of distinguished academics from the University of Antwerp. Instruction is a combination of different teaching methods.
Participants are required to attend all classes in which they have been enrolled and an adequate home preparation is expected from each student as well. There is an obligatory reading load. Background material (lecture notes, statutory and treaty provisions, cases and other relevant legal texts) are distributed to all participants, are available in the faculty library or can be bought in the university shop.
