Objectives (expected learning outcomes)

The aim of this course is to give the student an overview of nowadays telecommunication systems.

Course content

Not all layers of the OSI model (as treated in Telecommunication Systems 1) are considered, but only those that are relevant for the system under study. In particular, the following systems are studied:Digital telephony, SDH/PDH networks, ISDN networks, ATM networks, TCOP/IP networks(Internet), mobile networks (GSM/GPRS), access networks (APON, ADSL/VDSL), etc. Apart from general principles used in the design of those systems, we also discuss architectural aspects.
