Jan A.N. Buytaert was born in Sint-Niklaas (Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium) April 25th, 1983.
He studied Physics at the University of Antwerp (2001-2005), and graduated as Master in Physics Summa cum Laude (highest honor) in 2005. His thesis was entitled “Virtual, Fluorescence Optical-Sectioning Tomography (Construction, Calibration and Measurements)”, made at the Laboratory of BioMedical Physics (BiMeF) of the University of Antwerp, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Joris J.J. Dirckx. For his dissertation, Jan received two awards:
-Winner of the Business-2-Student award (2005) -Winner of the Barco n.v. award (2005)
The same year he started his PhD at BiMeF with a grant from the Research Council of the University of Antwerp. In October 2006, he received an aspirant fellowship from the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO), Belgium, which was renewed in October 2008. In December 2007, an award supporting young scientists was appointed to him:
-Winner of the Rosa Blanckaert award (2007)
In May 2009, he received an award for promising young Belgians in all fields:
-Winner of the Vocatio award (2009)
In June 2009, he won first prize in a poster contest, category Science, at the MEMRO2009 conference at Stanford University, CA, USA:
-Winner of the MEMRO best poster award (2009)
In April 2010, he obtained second place in the Young Speakers Contest organized by the Belgian Physical Society in Antwerp, BE.
Jan defended his PhD on the 20th of April 2010 and received his title of Doctor of Science in Physics with felicitations of the jury. His thesis was entitled “New optical Tomographic & Topographic Techniques for Biomedical Applications”, again made at the Laboratory of BioMedical Physics (BiMeF) of the University of Antwerp, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Joris J.J. Dirckx. In January 2011, he won an award for his PhD thesis from the Belgian Society of Microscopy in the category Instrumentation and Methods in Life Sciences:
-Winner of the 2010 BSM thesis award (2011)
Since October 2010, still at BiMeF, Jan is doing his post-doc with a fellowship of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO), Belgium. He organized two OPTIMESS conferences, and is editor of several books. Jan Buytaert, furthermore, is an accredited laboratory animal expert and has a degree in teaching. He represents AAP/BAP in the departemental board and research council of the University of Antwerp.
Jan married Eva Bauwens on November 22nd, 2008; leading to a son Alexander on August 20th, 2010; and a daughter Joachine on April 3rd, 2012.
