The research-project (in collaboration with Katrien Lichtert, UGent) focuses on how the city and the conception of ‘urbanity’ are represented in late medieval Flemish art. A sampling of images (in the first place paintings, but also miniatures, tapestry, graphic arts) is afoot, while an analytic framework in the form of a database allows a ‘content analysis’ of the iconographic material. We hope to investigate how pictorial cityscapes were possibly related to visual discourses of representation, the social position of patron and artist and the production of space in the late medieval and early modern city.
