2002-2008:
Doctoral program at the Faculty of Applied Economics, University of Antwerp.
Dissertation title: “The organizational adoption of open source server software: an information
systems innovation perspective”, advisor: prof. dr. Jan Verelst.
Abstract: In this dissertation, I determined which reasons influence the organizational adoption of
open source server software (OSSS). This term is used to refer to open source software (OSS) that
is mainly used for server-side applications. The theoretical foundation of this study consisted of the
adoption of innovations literature. The research was conducted as a mixed methods study consisting
of a sequential qualitative and quantitative study. The qualitative study had an exploratory nature
and used the case study approach. The quantitative study had a confirmatory nature and was used
to validate the findings from the qualitative by means of a large-scale survey. My main conclusion
was that the frequently claimed advantages of OSSS does not have a decisive impact on the adoption
of OSSS. Instead, my results indicated that the adoption of OSSS is primarily influenced by the
knowledge available to organizations.
