- Extreme right and populist right parties in Western Europe
- Parties and party systems (especially models of party competition)
- Coalition formation theories
- Islamic fundamentalism in Western Europe

My main project at this moment is my PhD-thesis, which is entitled From Pariah to Power. The Government Participation of Radical Right-WIng Populist Parties in West European Democracies. For this thesis, I have conducted a nested analysis of the position of the radical right in the Austrian, Belgian, Danish, French, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, and Dutch party systems.  

Recent publications include the articles "Political Extremism in Europe" for European Political Science (with Cas Mudde), "Explaining the Varying Success of the Vlaams Blok in the Districts of Antwerp" for Ethical Perspectives (with Peter Thijssen), "A New Winning Formula? The Programmatic Appeal of the Radical Right" for Party Politics, and the chapter 'From Pariah to Power Broker. The Radical Right in Government in Western Europe' in The New Right and Power edited by Pascal Delwit and Philippe Poirier.

From the 1st of September 2006 till the 28th of February 2007 I was a visiting student at the European University Institute in Florence.

Background
I received my M.A. in Political Science from the University of Leiden (the Netherlands). I have also an additional degree in Political Science from Science Po Paris.
