3. Course contents

DER EXPRESSIONISMUS UND SEINE FOLGEN

Expressionism is often considered to be the last specifically German modernist movement. An analysis of several important expressionist poems and prose texts is followed by a discussion of the "expressionism-debate" of 1938. This debate will be investigated on the basis of theoretical texts about expressionism's poetics and politics by some of the major authors and thinkers that participated in it (Gottfried Benn, Ernst Bloch, Bertolt Brecht, Georg Lukàcs). The course will close with reflections about the actuality of expressionism for our times.
