Very good German reading skills; general knowledge of German literary history, esp. of the 20th century
2. Learning outcomesAn understanding of the question whether a specific Austrian literature exists. Knowledge of the most important characteristics of twentieth-century and twenty-first century Austrian literature and its historical and social context. Knowledge of the texts discussed in the course as well as of the literary, historical and political context in which they were created.
3. Course contentsThis course will explore Austrian literature from 1900 until the present. Selected texts (by Schnitzler, Horvath, Qualtinger, Handke, Bernhard, Jelinek, Arno Geiger, Aichinger, Jandl, h.c. artmann, Schindel, Rabinovici and others) will be discussed in terms of their literary characteristics as well as in terms of the specific context of Austrian history and society.
We will thereby focus on the following four aspects of Austrian literature:
a) The foundations of the
Wiener Moderneb) The Austrian theater tradition of scandal and provocation (from Schnitzler to Jelinek)
c) Socio-politically engaged authors from the fifties until the present
d) Contemporary Austrian-Jewish authors
