Presentation
Wim Marivoet studied commercial engineer at the Faculty of Applied Economics of the University of Antwerp (Belgium). During these studies he became an active member of USOS, which further triggered his interest in development and many related issues. Subsequently, Wim followed the MA-program ‘Globalization and Economic Development’ at the Institute of Development Policy and Management (IOB). After this additional training, he joined the same institute; first as an academic collaborator and later-on as a research and teaching assistant.

Wim’s main thematic expertise centres on (the measurement of) welfare, poverty and inequality as well as on human development and capabilities. Geographically, he mainly focuses on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Currently, Wim is finishing his PhD-project on Livelihoods, Poverty and Development in the DRC. Other of his research interests mainly resort under IOB’s research lines ‘State, Economy and Society (SES)’ and ‘Local Institutions for Development (LID)’.

At IOB, Wim is responsible for the hands-on course ‘Working with data’ and is member of the steering committee ‘Debating Development’. In addition, he also teaches a practical course at the Catholic University of Congo (UCC-Kinshasa). At UCC, Wim is also heavily involved as a team member in a digital library and information project financed by VLIR-UOS. This same Congolese institution also represents the southern angle of the long-term institutional partnership with both IOB and USOS, in which Wim is also actively involved.
